Rila Monastery

The monastery is located at 1.147 meters altitude between aromatic plants in the pine forest of Rila.

The Rila Monastery was founded in 30 AD in place of old hermitages. During its existence, the monastery destroyed and rebuilt several times. The monastery has acquired its present appearance in the middle of last century. It is the largest and most respected Bulgarian monastery.

It is a complex of religious, residential and agricultural buildings with a total area of ​​8800 sq. m .The Rila Monastery has a unique architecture. Around its 24-meter stone garden, there are buildings in an irregular pentagon shape. The monastery looks like a fortress.
